Senior Health Check
International cat care guidelines recommend regular health checks, designed for different life stages. These visits are especially important for aging cats. The goal is to catch disease processes common to senior cats at an early stage. It is important to note that many illnesses can have very few clinical signs if at all. Symptoms can also begin to appear so slowly that you may not notice them at home. This is common and nothing to be ashamed of!
A senior wellness exam is intended for healthy, asymptomatic cats over 7 years of age. If your cat has clear symptoms of illness, please contact us to schedule a visit, as this may take more time than a routine check.
Recommended check-up intervals
- Mature cats 7–10 years: annual check
- Senior cats 10–15 years: check twice a year
- Super-senior cats 15+ years: check three times a year
Our senior examination includes
- Extensive patient history interview
- Screening questionnaires for chronic pain and cognitive function (dementia, senility)
- General examination
- Blood pressure measurement
- Bloodwork screening for common illnesses (blood count, organ biochemistry and, if necessary, thyroid value T4 and electrolytes)*
- Urinalysis for a urine sample brought from home (specific gravity, rapid screening parameters, sediment)
- Updating vaccinations as needed
Additional tests or procedures such as additional blood samples may be combined with the visit at the veterinarian’s discretion and owner’s approval. Additional procedures and tests will be charged separately according to our price list.
*There are two different levels of senior examinations: basic and extensive. The difference between these two is the scope of the blood tests. The veterinarian will assess the need for the scope of the blood tests during the visit, taking into account the cat’s life stage, background information and clinical examination findings.
